I came across maca root years ago, before having kids. I actually started it as I was discontinuing birth control for better health. I had originally gone on birth control for non-baby related reasons: acne and an irregular cycle. When I decided I had been on hormones for long enough and I needed to stop, I was worried about the irregular cycles coming back. So I did lots of research and found maca. I successfully transitioned off birth control and right into a normal, healthy cycle for the first time ever. I still attribute that successful transition to maca root and continue to take it today for multiple reasons. Today I’ll share those reasons and more.
What is Maca Root?
Maca root is just that, a root. It is a cruciferous vegetable, similar to radishes or turnips, and ranging in colors from white to black. It grows wild in Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina, and is used in both nutritionally and medicinally.
Maca root is full of vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, copper, iron, potassium, and vitamin B6. It also contains all eight essential amino acids. It is a powerhouse for the endocrine system, balancing hormones, increasing sexual health, and boosting energy levels.
What are the Benefits of Maca Root?
Maca root stimulates the adrenal glands and supports normal hormone production and liver detoxification. It can help with various hormonal issues such as PMS, cycle regularity, menopause, and hot flashes.
Maca increases both mood and energy. It stays with you through the day and doesn’t have the jittery side effects of caffeine. You’ll find multiple protein and workout drinks on the market boasting of extra energy, and find maca root on the ingredients list. It is very popular among athletes and bodybuilders, with studies showing it also helps with increasing endurance.
Maca supports healthy sexual function. It increases libido in women AND men. It is also being used for many women to aid in conceiving. I did not know about this aspect of maca until the last year or two when I found it popping up in mom circles online. Many women are turning to maca root as a way to boost their fertility to start or grow a family.

My Preferred Method/Brands
Maca root comes in dried and powdered form, capsules, and liquid extracts. I have not tried the liquid versions, but I have tried both the powder and capsule forms. Let me tell you something that I think is VERY important. Don’t take it in powder form if you have the option. That stuff is gross. It’s very earthy, chalky, gritty, and no tasty. I say this as someone who often sucks it up and takes it when it comes to oddly tasting supplements. But, seriously, get the capsules.
I started out on the powder form. I would shoot it in juice, or try to hide it in a smoothie. It mainly ruined my smoothies and needed a serious chaser or two when shooting it. TAKE THE CAPSULES.
I originally got the powder in bulk at a local co-op, over 10 years ago. Then I ordered it online. Then I got smart and switched to pills. I still get it online and currently use these capsules.
So if your endocrine system or maybe even your workout, could use a little boost. Maca might just be the supplement for you!
