Road trips. They were a big part of my childhood. I mean if we did go anywhere, we drove. I use to love it…sleeping, playing games, eating gas station junk food…what’s not to love? I also remember staying up late playing navigator to my dad with a REAL PAPER MAP. It was awesome!
Fast forward many years and I still loved road trips. Blaring music, gas station junk food, and chair dancing. Yes!
Fast forward again…kids. Hmm. They can put a damper on road trips. We live about 8 hours from my family and many of our friends. We are lucky enough to be able to go back frequently to visit everyone, but that means packing up a car, strapping a baby into a car seat, and praying that he naps at least enough to not turn into a monster.
Good luck.
The first few times were nothing. The smaller Little Man was (he was 6 weeks for the first trip), the easier it was to just get him to sleep most of the way. Now that he’s older (15 months), doesn’t like being imprisoned in his car seat, hates diaper changes, and stays awake longer, things can be rough. Sometimes we blare music and belt it out to stay sane. You do what you have to do.
“Sorry honey, we can’t just crash at Quik-Trip for the night, no matter how much daddy loves their hot bar, we have to keep driving.”
It’s rough goings sometimes, but it’s worth it in the end to see the family and friends we love so dearly. I pray one day God’s plan includes us all living closer, but until then, we will endure the nap nightmare car rides!
Do you cringe at the thought of car rides?
