We recently moved to a new house, in a new state. It’s been a whirlwind of a couple of months, and I’m still working on “finding” the house. I need to get everything put away to start feeling “normal” again, and to help our family function better. What better project for me right now, as a photographer and mother, than to use this time wondering around the house putting things away, to find the light at home.
I’m not afraid of showing the chaos in my own home, but while actually moving in, I find that chaos extremely stressful at some point. Usually once I’ve put away the majority of things and there are just random piles of things laying around with no home. When my energy levels are low, and I just want to see my counters. It’s not always the time that I think about grabbing my camera to take some photos. I also love capturing our days. The little things. And I’m trying not to miss those things while my brain is focused on finding a home for the giant collection of lightbulbs we’ve acquired.
Photography is also an outlet for me. A de-stressor. Something that brings joy to my soul. And I could use that right now. As I work to create our new home, while resting here and there, since I’m 26 weeks pregnant and my feet need breaks, my boys are in a place of transition where they desperately want me near. They need comfort and reassurance. Even if they say they love the new place, and can’t wait to explore, they are in new territory, and are currently tethered to the house as mama finds it.
Our routine is disrupted. Though it’s been off for while now. But now we no longer have grandparents’ houses to escape to here and there. It’s just us, in our new home, with dusty floors – thank you cardboard and paper – trying to carve out a new life. Again, what a great time to hunt for light around us. Figuratively, and literally.
The one comical aspect of this idea: it’s been raining since we got here. So, the light has been interesting, and not consistent. But! I found it. I love chasing light, and this time was no different. Moving around, shifting my angles, and just peacefully watching, I found light in my new home. And I plan to find even more as time goes by.
I’m loving the light by the front door. While it’s not always portrait quality light, it’s always beautiful to me.
We are loving the screened in patio. Especially with all of this rain. It also allows me to let the boys roam around and play “outside” while I’m working in and around the house. It has beautiful light in different spots throughout the day. Though it’s particularly pretty from 4-6 PM.
Something that I have noticed is the beautiful light in the gym. A room I probably won’t photograph much, because, it’s a gym. Here’s to dreaming about an outer building for the gym, and turning this into a play/homeschool room.
I’m finding that the sitting area in the master bedroom has beautiful light just about any time of day. Thank you Southern window. It’s also a space I’m trying to keep chaos to a minimum so that I have a space to go to at all times. Also note: yarn for water bottle holders that I started months ago. I’ve finished one of three.
Now it’s your turn. Go find the light at home!
