I may have nerded out a bit when I was asked to do this session in the new City Center Library. I was SO excited. Libraries are so fun to me, and it was something I had never done before. New adventures and jumping out of my comfort zone, can be really fun!
I was not disappointed.
Stacks on Stacks
Gone are the days of the old, giant stacks. At least here. I love those things. The ones that move when you crank them are some of my favorite. You don’t get quite the same feel with the shorter stacks, but I think we got awesome shots through these particular stacks.
We had to be strategic about angles. The family was told that we were allowed to shoot there as long as we didn’t disturb patrons. Done. I can do that. Storytime had let out JUST as we were suppose to start, so we had moms and toddlers running around. They were mainly contained to one area, but I didn’t want people worried about me taking photos of their kids. We warned them of what we were doing and I assured them I would keep them out of my shots.
That meant choosing locations wisely, as well as being patient when certain areas were in use. This specific stack was one of the few that ended with a stack in the back. That kept the background free of distraction, and lessened the possibility of photobombing.
Let Them Play
Kids. I love them. I have kiddos that are either all about photos or completely against them. Some times that swing happens in minutes. This little one was very interested in me, but mainly interested in the AWESOME library and all it has to offer.
I tried to let her do her thing and capture her nature play. Sometimes a simple suggestion or direction can get awesome images. I loved watching her explore.
Mom + Dad
When she needed a break we focused on Mom and Dad. I got some fun shots in the stacks, and outside as well. There is a great balcony that we got to play on a bit and run out some energy. I also had to take care of some specific poses/shots that were requested.
Mommy + Me
Ultimately we did a lot of playing while there and I captured a lot of it. It was like a lifestyle library session. I absolutely love these moments between Mama and daughter!
After a bit there was a little stress over leaving a Mancala board on a table. So I suggesting bringing it into the photos! This little girl had no problems happily playing and dumping gems while I snapped on. I think it turned into some really fun images. There may have been multiple spills and pick up sessions not pictured.
I absolutely loved this session in the library and I love how it turned out! Even the JoCo Library shared the images on their page.
Here’s to more library sessions!
