• Surviving Hand, Foot, and Mouth | Round Two

I hate hand, foot, and mouth. It really messes up my schedule.

As I discussed in a previous post, the boys came down with hand, foot, and mouth previously. Then about a month and a half later…spots started showing up on Wyatt’s diaper area. Okay, at first I thought it was just diaper rash. Maybe I left his diaper on too long? No biggie.

Despite showing signs of HFM, he still acted completely normal like nothing was wrong.

I sent him off to stay the day with Grandma and Grandpa like usual. He came back the next day and I went to change his diaper again…red and white blisters everywhere.

      NOOOO!!!!!

I think a tiny frustrated person inside my head actually yelled that. Outwardly I tried to remain calm. My sister and dad were over for his birthday. Whoops! I calmly checked over her hands and feet. There were no blisters, but there were a couple red dots.

      Dun, dun DUUUNNNNN!

When Mama needs a break and doesn’t care how big a mess the kiddos make, as long as she can have a moment to get something done.

      Seriously?!?!? Again!?!?

Research ensued. Twice in two months? Seriously? I knew you could get hand, foot, and mouth more than once, but can’t a mama catch a break? I read, and I read. As a result,  I discovered that some people think that if it comes back that quickly that it was still the same virus. Just as with my previous research mission, I found a lot of contradicting information and no real answers.

      Changing My Plan of Attack:

This time around I did, however, decide to “treat” it. I did a lot of searching for what other people did. Eventually I stumbled upon this blog and made up a batch of “Curing the Ickies” spray. It uses lemon, lavender, tea tree, and chamomile/frankincense essential oils with coconut oil to help the blisters. I used frankincense since I had it on hand and didn’t have any chamomile.

I started applying it at every diaper change. I’m not sure if it was the spray, if he got a less severe case, or if it was truly just a secondary flare up, but after that the sores went away in a matter of days compared to weeks.

I still like to use the spray when I feel like the boys are under the weather!
